The NEH supports the translation of the journal of slave ship’s surgeon Johann Peter Oettinger

August 2016

The National Endowment for the Humanities – the federal agency of the U.S. government dedicated to support research in the humanities – has awarded a Grant for Scholarly Editions and Translations to the project “Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean: The Travel Account and Biography of Johann Peter Oettinger, 1682–1696”. Thanks to this grant Craig Koslofsky and Roberto Zaugg will prepare an English edition of the journal by barber-surgeon Johann Peter Oettinger, an unpublished German-language source providing a detailed account of Dutch and Brandenburg slaving voyages in the late seventeenth century.

The project will be based at the Department of History of the University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign).
